The absolute hardest part of working on 1 PAGE AT A TIME: A DAILY CREATIVE COMPANION was choosing a title. I wanted to be weirder and stupider (my top pick was “THIS IS JUST PAPER,” obviously) but Marian Lizzi, my amazing editor, was like “uhh, that is not a helpful title.” We struggled to find the balance between the true optimism and goal of the book, and the total sarcasm and self-deprecation of its voice (so, my actual voice). We sent each other a lot of emails.

Ultimately we picked 1 PAGE AT A TIME, which I must have somehow known early on. My working folder during the process was called “1 BOOK AT A TIME.” It was meant as a note to myself not to freak out, that this is just a book, people make books all the time, I just need to focus on this one thing and get through it. It became my own mantra (it’s a pretty common one), and it’s in the spirit of the book itself. 

1 PAGE AT A TIME is about slowing down. It’s about realizing that days are like pages, there are more to come. 1 year of pages ends up being about an inch thick, so it is substantial… but there are a whole lot of books in the world. There is always more (if you want it).

The book gently (and not gently) pushes you through this year, gets you writing about past, present, and future, facing your fears and then turning the page. “Write CAUTION on this page repeatedly, then throw it to the wind!” It’s just paper, it’s pencils and pens, you have all the tools, you’re a tool too, and boom, we just got through a whole year.
